Our take on the Scrambler 400 X / XC
With 39.5 HP and 27.7 lb-ft it is quick off the line and loves to rev, and the stainless twin-skin header gives it a crisp Triumph bark. The ribbed bench seat and premium finish make it look as good parked as it does moving.
The tall stance gives you a clear view over traffic, and at 395 lb with fuel it turns in quickly and feels nimble at low speed. Take a dirt road on the way home and the long-travel suspension shrugs it off.
What the reviewers say
“All this adds up to a bike that turns sharply in slow-speed dirt tracks but still has plenty of stability when it comes to the blacktop.”
Cycle NewsRennie Scaysbrook, February 2024Read the review on Cycle News (opens in a new tab) “Even though I had a long stretch to the ground, I found the seating position of the Scrambler more comfortable for all-day riding than its Speed sibling.”
RiderAllison Parker, February 2024Read the review on Rider (opens in a new tab) “It’s the Scrambler’s longer headstock and taller saddle that make it look and feel more like a full-sized motorcycle.”

Compare two Scrambler 400 versions
X and XC compared

Choose the XC if your rides end on dirt, or you just love the look. Tubeless spoked wheels, Metzeler Karoo Street tires, a flyscreen, engine bars, a headlight grille and a high front fender give it the full scrambler kit.
Choose the X if these features aren't important to you. It's the same 398cc single, suspension and brakes, and it weighs 16 lb less and costs $700 less.
More on these two
Which one fits your riding
The X: The 400 X is a light, fun scrambler for town, back roads and the odd gravel road. It's the pick if most of your riding is on pavement and you'd rather spend the difference on gear, or add the bits you want later.
The XC: The XC is the 400 dressed for the trail. Reviewers say it rides almost exactly like the X, so this one's about the kit and the look. Spoked wheels and the high fender make it the one that turns heads parked outside the coffee shop.
What the XC adds
Everything in the X, plus:
- Side-laced tubeless spoked wheels in place of cast
- Metzeler Karoo Street tubeless tires
- Lower engine bars, a flyscreen, a headlight grille and a high front mudguard, listed for the XC only
- An aluminum sump guard, where the X lists a sump guard
