Triumph Speed 400 vs. Scrambler 400 X / XC

Same 400 single. One for the street, one for the dirt road.

Both share the 398cc single, the six-speed gearbox and Triumph's build quality. The real difference is where you ride: the Speed 400 is a light, quick roadster, the Scrambler 400 X is ready for the gravel road at the end of the pavement.

Choose the Scrambler 400 X / XC if…

  • Your rides go past where the pavement ends.
  • You want a 19-inch front wheel and longer-travel suspension.
  • You like a bike that feels full-sized, with a taller seat.

Which one fits your riding style?

Here's where the difference shows up on the road.

Around town

The Speed 400 is 20 lb lighter, with a 1.8 in lower seat and quick steering, so it's easy to slip through traffic. The Scrambler is just as easy to ride, but it sits taller and feels like a bigger bike.

The difference: The Speed 400 is the easier city bike.

Weekend back roads

Both are a blast on a twisty road like Ortega Highway. The Speed 400's 17-inch wheels turn in quickly. Reviewers found the Scrambler's seat more comfortable for all-day riding.

The difference: The Speed 400 is sharper on pavement. The Scrambler is comfier all day.

Gravel and dirt roads

The Scrambler 400 X is built for it, with a 19-inch front wheel, longer-travel suspension and a sump guard as standard. Reviewers found it turns sharply on a slow dirt track and stays stable back on the blacktop. The Speed 400 is made for pavement.

The difference: If dirt roads are part of your plans, choose the Scrambler.

Is the Scrambler 400 X worth the extra?

It comes down to where the pavement ends for you.

If you ride in town and on paved back roads, the Speed 400 is lighter, lower and quicker to turn, and it's all the 400 you need.

If you want to explore fire roads on the weekend and still ride to work on Monday, the Scrambler 400 X is built for both. The difference is $700 in MSRP.

Our advice: Don't buy the dirt-road bike for a dirt road you'll never ride. But if the gravel is calling, the Scrambler is the one.

The best way to decide is to sit on both, back to back. We'll have them side by side for you.
