Privacy policy

This policy explains how Southern California Motorcycles (“SCM”, “we”, “us”) handles personal information. It covers this website, www.socalmotorcycles.com, and the information you give us in person, by phone, by text and by email. SCM is at 515 West Lambert Rd, Brea, CA 92821, (714) 256-6700.

Our online stores, shop.socalmotorcycles.com and offroad.socalmotorcycles.com, run on Shopify and have their own privacy policies. Choices you make on this site don’t carry over to them.

The short version

  • Advertising tools load only after you say yes. We use Google Analytics, without its advertising features, to see how the site is used.
  • We honor Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends it, we turn off advertising and Google Analytics.
  • We don’t sell your information for money.
  • Credit applications are sealed in your browser before they’re sent, and never travel by email.
  • Questions? Call (714) 256-6700 or email info@socalmotorcycles.com.

What we collect

  • Contact details, such as your name, phone number, email, address and ZIP code.
  • What you’re interested in, such as the bike you asked about, your trade-in, the service you need or the part you’re looking for.
  • Purchase, finance and service records when you do business with us.
  • Credit application details, only if you apply for financing, including the sensitive information lenders need, such as your Social Security number, date of birth, driver’s license, employment and income.
  • Text message consent, if you tick the optional text box on a form: your phone number, the consent wording you agreed to, and when and where you agreed.
  • Website activity, such as pages and bikes viewed, forms sent, device and browser details and approximate location from your IP address, measured with Google Analytics. Advertising cookie IDs and ad click IDs are collected only if you allow advertising.
  • Anonymous visit counts from our own counter, which uses no cookies and stores no identifier or IP address.

We get this information from you, from your device when you allow it, and from others you deal with through us: the manufacturers we’re franchised with, the lenders you apply with, sites that list our bikes, and advertising platforms that report how our ads performed.

How we use it

  • To answer your questions and do business with you: sell, register, finance and service your motorcycle, and handle warranty and recall work.
  • To send email news and offers to customers and to people who contact us, and texts only if you asked for them.
  • To measure and improve the site.
  • To measure our ads and show relevant ones, only if you allow advertising.
  • To keep the site and our records secure, prevent fraud and spam, and meet our legal duties.

Sending a form asks us to get back to you about what you asked, and we may also send you occasional email news and offers. You can unsubscribe from them at any time. Every bike shows the same Total Price to everyone; we never use your information to set a different price for you.

Who we share it with

  • Service providers that run our website, database, customer relationship system, email, texting and dealership software for us, under contract, and only to provide those services.
  • The manufacturers we’re franchised with, for warranty, recalls, sales reporting, incentives and leads. They may also use your contact details for their own marketing (see “Shine the Light” below).
  • The lenders you apply with, if you ask us to arrange financing.
  • The California DMV and other government agencies, to register and title your motorcycle, and when the law requires it.
  • Advertising networks and social media networks, only as described in “Advertising and your choices” below.
  • A buyer of our business, if SCM is ever sold, under the same promises made here.
  • Others when needed, to protect our rights, our customers or the public.

Advertising and your choices

We don’t sell personal information for money. When you allow advertising on this site, advertising networks and social media networks receive information about your visit to measure our ads and show you relevant ones. When you send a form with advertising allowed, we may also send them a scrambled (hashed) copy of your email and phone number, so they can tell which ad led to the enquiry. We may also share our customers’ contact details with advertising networks and social media networks so they can show our ads to those customers. To opt out, contact us and we’ll take you off.

California law can treat some of this as “selling” or “sharing.” You can turn it off at any time on Your Privacy Choices, or by turning on Global Privacy Control in your browser.

Cookies and similar tools

We ask before any advertising tools load. The banner offers Accept and Reject as equal choices, and closing it isn’t a yes. You can change your mind at any time on Your Privacy Choices.

  • Necessary, always on: remembers your choice, keeps forms working and stops spam.
  • Measurement, on unless you turn it off: Google Analytics, with its advertising features off, to see how the site is used.
  • Advertising, only if you accept: advertising networks and social media networks, to measure our ads and show relevant ones.

Videos open on YouTube and directions open Google Maps, in a new tab. The credit application page loads no measurement or advertising tools, whatever you choose.

Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends it, we turn off measurement and advertising, and treat it as an opt-out of selling and sharing, in that browser. Do Not Track has no common standard, so the site doesn’t respond to it differently.

Credit applications

Applying for financing online works like a sealed envelope. Your browser encrypts the application before it’s sent, only our finance managers can open it, and your Social Security number, date of birth and income never travel by email. Once our finance manager prints and processes your application, the online copy is deleted. An application that isn’t processed is erased after 7 days.

We use sensitive information only to process your application and complete your purchase. We don’t use it for advertising, and we don’t sell or share it. Information you give to apply for credit is also covered by the federal Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, and finance customers receive our separate financial privacy notice.

Texts and email

  • Replies to your enquiry come by call, email or text from someone on our team, about what you asked. Message and data rates may apply.
  • Marketing texts: we don’t send them yet. If we start, they’ll go only to people who tick the optional text box on a form. It’s never required to buy anything. Reply STOP to any text, or tell us any other way, and we’ll stop. Reply HELP for help. We never sell or share your text consent, or the phone number you gave for texts, with other companies for their own marketing.
  • Email news goes to people who ask for it, customers we do business with, and people who contact us through a form or by phone. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing never affects a reply about your bike or your service.

How long we keep it

We keep personal information only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes we collected it for, or as long as the law requires.

How we protect it

The site runs over HTTPS, credit applications are encrypted in your browser, and only a few managers can sign in to our systems, with multi-factor sign-in. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep as little as we can.

Shine the Light

California’s “Shine the Light” law (Civil Code § 1798.83) lets California customers ask, once a year, which personal information we shared with other companies for their own direct marketing in the past year, and with whom. Manufacturers we’re franchised with may receive your contact details when you buy or register a bike and may use them for their own marketing. To ask, email info@socalmotorcycles.com or write to us at the address below, with “Your California Privacy Rights” in the subject.

Children

This site is for adults. It isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy
