Our take on the DR-Z4S / DR-Z4SM

The DR-Z4S is a true dual sport, happy to bash down a rocky fire road and just as willing to run errands in town, with a fuel-injected 398cc single that pulls cleanly at low revs and keeps its composure when the surface turns loose. The DR-Z4SM puts the same engine in a twin-spar steel frame on 17-inch wheels with sportbike tires, and a tight canyon road becomes its personal playground.

Out on the trail the DR-Z4S feels light on its feet yet planted, the kind of bike that makes you want to explore every side trail you pass. The tapered aluminum handlebar, wide footpegs with removable rubber inserts and reshaped seat make long days easier, and Easy Start fires the engine with one press. Both keep the quick-release, door-style side cover for easy air filter access.

What’s new on the current DR-Z4S / DR-Z4SM

This generation arrived for 2025.

  • Fuel injection at last

The DR-Z400S carburetor gives way to electronic fuel injection and a ride-by-wire throttle. Expect easier starting, smoother fueling and no more jetting.

  • Ride modes and traction control

Three power modes (A, B and C) change how the power arrives, and traction control includes a Gravel mode tuned for loose dirt roads. You can switch traction control off when you want to.

  • Switchable ABS and bigger brakes

ABS is new, and you can run it at both wheels, turn it off at the rear, or turn it off completely, a first for a Suzuki production bike. The rotors grow to 10.6 in front and 9.4 in rear.

Everything new
  • New frame and aluminum swingarm

A new twin-spar steel frame with an aluminum subframe and a lightweight aluminum swingarm sharpens handling on pavement and trail.

  • Fully adjustable KYB suspension

An inverted KYB fork with 11.0 in of travel replaces the old conventional fork, and the linkage shock has 11.6 in. Both adjust for compression and rebound, and the shock adjusts for preload too.

  • Reworked 398cc single

The DOHC single keeps its proven layout but gets a new cylinder head, titanium intake valves, sodium-filled exhaust valves, twin spark plugs and Suzuki's assist-and-slipper clutch for a lighter lever pull.

  • Roomier, more modern cockpit

The seat is 0.6 in lower at 36.2 in and wider, the bar sits about an inch higher and the pegs are wider. LED lighting all around and a new LCD dash with a fuel gauge round it out.

Questions riders ask

DR-Z4S or DR-Z4SM?

Same 398cc engine, and both are a hoot. The DR-Z4S is the dual sport, with 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheels, 11.0 inches of front travel and ABS that can be switched off at the rear or at both wheels. The DR-Z4SM is the supermoto, with 17-inch wheels, sportbike tires, a 310mm front disc and switchable rear ABS.

What's the seat height?

Suzuki lists 36.2 inches for the DR-Z4S and 35.0 inches for the DR-Z4SM. A low-profile seat is available for both through Suzuki Genuine Accessories, and the same range covers a skid plate and handguards.

What riding modes and rider aids do they have?

Both carry the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System: three engine power modes, traction control with 1, 2, Gravel and Off settings, ABS and Easy Start. The DR-Z4S can switch ABS off at the rear or at both wheels, and the DR-Z4SM can switch off rear ABS.

DR-Z4SMMSRP $7,999

Choose the DR-Z4SM if your playground is pavement. It's the supermoto, with 17-inch wheels, Dunlop Sportmax sport tires and a bigger 310 mm front disc, and it turns every tight back road into a go-kart track.

Choose the DR-Z4S if you want to ride where the pavement ends. The 21-inch front wheel, more suspension travel and 11.8 in of ground clearance make it the trail bike of the two, at the same MSRP.

More on these two

Which one fits your riding

The DR-Z4S: The DR-Z4S is the dual sport: commute on it during the week, then point it up a fire road on Saturday. Reviewers found it balanced and easy to manage on dicey downhills and twisty tarmac alike, and the long-travel KYB suspension soaks up the rough stuff.

The DR-Z4SM: The DR-Z4SM is pure fun on the street. It shares the S's engine and frame, but the 17-inch wheels, sticky tires and stronger front brake make it a supermoto that loves tight corners, and the seat sits a little lower.

What the DR-Z4SM adds

Everything in the DR-Z4S, plus:

  • 17-inch wheels with a 120/70R17 front tire, in place of a 21-inch
  • A 310 mm front disc in place of 270 mm
  • A seat 1.2 in lower
