Our take on the V-Strom 800

Its 776cc parallel twin pulls strongly low in the rev range, and the 270-degree crank gives it power delivery that recalls Suzuki's V-twins along with an exhaust note all its own that sounds fantastic on a mountain pass. On pavement the 800 feels nimble and planted with comfort for long days, while the 800DE, the most dirt-capable V-STROM, is a thrill on a gravel road and gets more fun as the pavement ends.

Day to day, the 800 is the easier companion on the street, with a lower 32.5-inch seat and a hand-operated rear preload adjuster for adding a passenger or bags. Its radiator guard and undercover help when the trail gets rough. Both carry a 5.3-gallon tank and a resin luggage rack with grab bars.

What the reviewers say

  • “The "standard" 800 is a marvelous street bike. It's very comfortable, handles exceptionally well, has a great motor, has excellent range, and does just fine on maintained county dirt roads.”

  • “Fueling had no hiccups, and the power was delivered in both a spirited and smooth manner. The suspension didn't have excessive dive under braking or squat under hard throttle.”

Questions riders ask

V-STROM 800 or 800DE?

Choose the 800 for road riding with the occasional dirt road, with a cast 19-inch front wheel, a 32.5-inch seat and 492 pounds. The 800DE suits more off-road riding, with a 21-inch spoked front wheel, 8.7 inches of ground clearance, a 33.7-inch seat and 507 pounds.

What's the seat height?

Suzuki lists 32.5 inches for the V-STROM 800 and 33.7 inches for the 800DE. Both tanks narrow at the rear into a slim seat to help at stops, and low- and high-profile seats are available as Suzuki Genuine Accessories.

Can I switch off the ABS?

On the 800DE you can switch off rear ABS for gravel and other unpaved surfaces, and choose between two ABS sensitivity levels. The V-STROM 800 also offers rider-adjustable ABS with two levels of sensitivity.
