Our take on the GSX-S1000GX

A 999cc inline-four with GSX-R roots supplies smooth, strong power at any speed, and when you roll it on hard the acceleration is genuinely exhilarating. Longer-travel suspension and an upright riding position keep it relaxed over rough pavement. Dial the damping softer for town or firmer for a mountain road, and the bike changes character to match, turning into a proper canyon carver when you ask.

On a long day the GX+ keeps things easy, then rewards you with that inline-four howl when the road opens up. Rear preload adjusts electronically for a passenger or luggage, Low RPM Assist smooths pulling away, and the rubber-mounted handlebar and standard hand guards cut down on vibration and weather.

What the reviewers say

  • “The balance offered by semi-active suspension deserves high praise. The automatically adjusted damping keeps the GX's suspension well-controlled at all times.”

  • “In terms of other rider-comfort features, the cruise control is very cool, and you can even change gears without canceling the cruise control.”

Cycle NewsKeith Dowdle, December 2023Read the review on Cycle News (opens in a new tab)
  • “Its new electronic suspension gives a plush ride and sharpens beautifully at speed, but better tyres and stronger brakes would elevate the handling and riding experience.”

Questions riders ask

GSX-S1000GX+ or V-STROM 1050?

Both are built for distance. The GX+ uses the 999cc inline-four, electronic suspension, 17-inch wheels and standard side cases, at 511 pounds without the cases mounted. The V-STROM 1050 uses the 1037cc V-twin, a 19-inch front wheel and an adjustable KYB fork, at 534 pounds.

What's the seat height?

Suzuki lists 33.3 inches. The longer suspension and seat shape add 0.6 inches between hip point and foot point, which means less knee bend and a comfortable, upright position on long rides.

Does it connect to my phone?

Yes. The 6.5-inch full-color TFT uses Suzuki's mySPIN app to show navigation, phone calls, your contacts and your music library, and it's also where you adjust the electronic suspension modes and damping levels.
