Triumph Trident 800 vs. Street Triple 765

Two Triumph triples. One for every road, one for the fast ones.

Both are quick naked triples with a six-speed gearbox and Shift Assist. The real difference is focus: the Trident 800 is built to be fast and comfortable everywhere, the Street Triple RS is a supersport chassis with the fairing taken off.

  • You want an Öhlins shock and Brembo Stylema brakes.
  • You like a firmer, sportier riding position.
  • You want the lighter bike, by 22 lb.

Which one fits your riding style?

Here's where the difference shows up on the road.

Around town and the commute

The Trident 800 sits you more upright on a 1 in lower seat, and its 61.9 lb-ft triple pulls cleanly from low revs, so stop-and-go traffic is easy. The Street Triple's sportier position and firmer setup ask a little more of you at walking pace.

The difference: The Trident 800 is the easier everyday bike.

Weekend back roads

On Ortega Highway both are a lot of fun. Reviewers found the Trident 800 pulls hard out of every corner and stays comfortable all morning. The Street Triple adds 15.2 hp at the top, an Öhlins shock and Brembo Stylema brakes, and it's sharper when you push.

The difference: The Trident 800 is fast and relaxed. The Street Triple is faster and more focused.

Track days

The Street Triple RS is built for it, with a supersport chassis and suspension to match. The Trident 800 is set up for the road first.

The difference: If track days are on your calendar, choose the Street Triple.

Is the Street Triple worth the step up?

It depends on how hard you ride.

If your week is commuting, coffee runs and a weekend loop up the coast, the Trident 800 gives you a fast, comfortable triple, and you won't feel short of anything.

If you want the sharper chassis, the Öhlins shock and the brakes for track days and hard canyon rides, the Street Triple earns its keep. The step up is $3,550 in MSRP.

Our advice: Buy for the riding you actually do. Most of us spend a lot more time on the commute than on the track.

The best way to decide is to sit on both, back to back. We'll have them side by side for you.
