Triumph Speed Twin 900 vs. 1200

Two Speed Twins. One easygoing, one with a lot more muscle.

Both are modern classics with a Triumph twin, a comfortable riding position and timeless looks. The real difference is the engine: the 900 is smooth and easygoing, the 1200 pulls much harder and adds a sixth gear and twin front discs.

  • You ride mostly around town and on relaxed back roads.
  • You want a lower seat, 1 in lower than the 1200.
  • You like smooth, steady power and light steering.

Choose the 1200 if…

  • You want strong acceleration at any speed.
  • You ride the freeway and like a sixth gear for cruising.
  • You want twin front discs and 17-inch wheels for spirited riding.

Which one fits your riding style?

Here's where the difference shows up on the road.

Around town

The 900 is low, light-steering and easy, and reviewers call it a great commuter. The 1200 is easy too, with more power than you'll use between lights.

The difference: The 900 gives you everything you need in town.

Freeway and longer trips

The 900 cruises comfortably, with five gears to work with. The 1200's 83 lb-ft twin and sixth gear make a long stretch of the 5 more relaxed.

The difference: Both make the trip. The 1200 makes it easier.

Weekend back roads

On Angeles Crest, the 900 is steady and fun at a flowing pace. The 1200 drives out of corners with 24 lb-ft more torque, and its twin floating discs bring more stopping power. Reviewers say it's just as happy a gear high as it is revved out.

The difference: The 900 is easygoing. The 1200 is exhilarating.

Is the Speed Twin 1200 worth the step up?

It depends on how much performance you'll use.

If your riding is town, the coast and easy weekend loops, the 900 is smooth and comfortable, and reviewers call it probably the best compromise in Triumph's modern classic range. You may never want more.

If you ride freeways and fast back roads, or simply want the big twin's pull, the 1200 earns its keep. The step up is $3,900 in MSRP.

Our advice: Sit on both, then take the one you're leaning toward for a test ride. The 1200's extra pull is obvious in the first mile; decide whether you'll use it.

The best way to decide is to sit on both, back to back. We'll have them side by side for you.
