Triumph Speed 400 vs. Tracker 400

Same 400 single. One classic roadster, one flat-track hooligan.

Both share the 398cc single, the same fork, brakes and six-speed gearbox. The real difference is attitude: the Speed 400 is a timeless roadster, the Tracker 400 is a flat-track styled bike with a wide bar that loves to be ridden hard.

Which one fits your riding style?

Here's where the difference shows up on the road.

Around town

Both are light and easy in traffic. The Speed 400 is 7 lb lighter with a lower seat. The Tracker's wide bar gives you plenty of leverage, so it's easy to flick around.

The difference: Both are great city bikes. The Tracker feels a little more playful.

Weekend back roads

On a twisty road, both are a lot of fun on the same 398cc single. Reviewers found the Tracker predictable and controllable when you push. The Speed 400 is smooth and composed.

The difference: The Speed 400 is the easygoing classic. The Tracker invites you to ride harder.

Your first ride on one

Reviewers found the Tracker the most intuitive of Triumph's 400s, with everything feeling natural from the moment you sit on it. The Speed 400 is just as approachable, with an upright, classic riding position.

The difference: Both are easy to get along with. Choose the one whose look you love.

Is the Tracker 400 worth the extra?

It's mostly about which one you want to see in the garage.

Under the skin they share the engine, the fork and the brakes. If the classic roadster is your style, the Speed 400 gives you all of it.

If the flat-track look and the wide bar make you grin, the Tracker adds a touch more power and an attitude to match. The difference is $500 in MSRP.

Our advice: Pick the one you'll want to ride every day. Same heart, different personality.

The best way to decide is to sit on both, back to back. We'll have them side by side for you.
