Our take on the DesertX
It's at ease on trails and asphalt alike, and one look is enough to have you planning a trip toward the horizon. Choices include the 937cc DesertX and DesertX Discovery and the all-new DesertX V2, and every one of them is an adventure waiting to happen.
Off road the DesertX feels composed and easy to place, and blasting down an open fire road on it's sheer exhilaration. The new V2 engine's smooth, tractable pull helps you find grip on loose ground, and its wide handlebar and slim middle let you move freely when you stand on the pegs. Back on the highway it settles in comfortably, so the ride to the trailhead is part of the fun.
What the reviewers say
“In the prior version, I felt it was begging me to shift at specific intervals, but with the new V2 engine, the power is accessible across wider rev ranges.”
The 890cc V2 replaces the 937cc Testastretta. It makes 110 hp, with 70% of peak torque by 3,000 rpm, and valve checks move to 28,000 miles with oil changes about every 9,000 miles.
Gearing for the dirt
The first four gears are shorter for crawling over obstacles, and sixth is taller for calmer highway miles.
Monocoque frame and easy air filter
A dedicated aluminum monocoque frame doubles as the airbox, and the air filter now comes out quickly for cleaning after a dusty day.
Everything new
Linkage rear suspension and new fork
A progressive full-floater linkage replaces the direct-mount shock, soft early in the stroke and firmer on big hits. The new fully adjustable KYB fork has independent damping adjustment on each leg.
Slimmer tank, new riding position
A 4.8-gallon polymer tank is slimmer and carries its fuel low, and the pegs move back while the bars and seat move forward for easier standing. Seat height is 34.6 inches, down to 33.1 with a low seat and lowering kit.
Brakes tuned for feel
Brembo M4.32 calipers now work on smaller 12-inch discs with a redesigned master cylinder and lever, for better modulation in the dirt.
Off-road electronics
Six riding modes including Enduro and Rally, four cornering ABS levels with two for dirt, a new 5-inch TFT with a Rally tripmaster view, and Quick Shift 2.0 with no external sensor to get knocked off.
