Lots of people make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, exercise more, eat better, etc. but how many really do it, even for a while. New Year’s Resolutions are good because they give you a solid starting point and are easy to keep track of.
As I sit here in my garage looking at these motorcycles I am bound and determined to achieve my New Year’s resolution, and that is to ride more in 2023 than I have in many years!
This is not as easy to achieve as it may seem, because it is always so easy, especially in Southern California, to say “I’ve got stuff to do today, I’ll just ride tomorrow.” Then tomorrow comes and you say the same thing again. Well, damn it, I’m gonna change that this year!
We ride because of how it makes us feel and the pure joy it brings us. Try to remember that every time you look at your bike.

Riding Ducati’s
Inaugural Giro Alpino in Colorado
On one of the Multistrada’s many roads.
Last year, somewhere in the Adirondack Mountains, heading to my home in the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York, I had that sudden urge familiar to motorcyclists: to point the compass west, ignore responsibilities at home, and just keep riding. I imagined going to the far side of the US map, passing the well-worn creases bisecting nearby states until the ink fades from green to brown and the Rocky Mountains appear as a jumble of shapes and colors.
My flight of fancy was inspired in the moment—tempted, more like—as usual, by a Ducati. This time I was aboard a brand-new Multistrada V4 S. Fast, comfortable, and refined, the latest Multistrada would be just about perfect for a long trip west, I thought.
