Touring and Adventure Touring bikes.
Back in the day, in the 50’s and 60’s, there weren’t many choices of the style of bike you rode. It was basically a street bike or dirt bike. As technology advanced, manufacturers were able to put different components on motorcycles that would make them perform better for different styles of riding. Race bikes got racing suspension, better aerodynamics, etc., while touring bikes got softer suspension, great wind protection, and lots of luggage.
Today, there are so many different motorcycle styles like naked, sport, touring, adventure, dual-sport, motocross, trail, and the list goes on.
I digress! The two styles I want to discuss are Touring and adventure touring bikes. Touring bikes are meant to be your long haul road bikes that will be comfortable, have great wind protection, storage, and lots of bells and whistles to make your long hours on the road comfortable and fun. And they do a great job at that. The Honda Goldwing’s excellence and 48-year history proves it.
Adventure bikes are a different breed but used very much like Touring bikes. In fact, the big Adventure bikes like the Triumph Tiger 1200 are used more for long-range touring, in most of the rest of the world, way more than our “Touring” bikes.
They have long travel suspension, lots of storage space, reasonably good wind protection, and are very comfortable. They kind of look like off-road bikes and they have some off-road prowess, but most people never take them off-road. They are kind of like the SUV in that they can go off-road but are mainly used on-road. That’s okay though because they offer things a “Touring bike” doesn’t, like long travel suspension that when adjusted to touring is so comfortable, they tend to be much lighter and more nimble also. Believe it or not, they can be quite fun in the twisties.
You know I have many franchises and can ride any bike I want. If I were to take off and go cross country, I would take my Triumph Tiger 900 GT PRO rather than any other bike.
When you think about a new motorcycle, decide the style you will be riding most and pick a bike in that genre. At the end of the day, they all have two wheels and will do it all, but if you get one that is designed for the riding you do, you will be much happier.
