At one time it was cool to ride without a helmet on and with virtually no protective gear. You could feel the wind in your hair, and it was experiencing motorcycling in its rawest form. Well, times have changed, and the quality, comfort and performance of protective riding gear is such that you can enjoy motorcycling AND have a good chance of having less problems if you should have a get-off.
It breaks my heart when I see young riders with a girl on the back and she is wearing flip flops, shorts, and a t-shirt. I know what she will look like if they have an accident. At least now they have to wear helmets. Of course I saw a young couple riding yesterday. The guy had the helmet on, and the girl's long hair was flowing behind them. No helmet for her!
Cyndy will not even ride her motorcycle without all of her gear on. She wears a jacket and pants with body armor installed, good boots, gloves, and an Arai full face helmet. I do the same except I will ride with blue jeans once in a while. I have hit the ground so many times in the dirt and on the asphalt, and I am so thankful that I had proper gear on that I was only injured a couple of times. The gear did its job exceptionally well. It will blow your mind how comfortable proper riding gear is and how it actually makes the ride more enjoyable! Riding pants and jackets are now available with air bags like the pro racers are using if you want even more protection.
Wearing all the best gear will not guarantee you won't have an injury, but it increases your chances of not being hurt tremendously. Do some research, try on some gear and ride smart and safe!
