TIDBITS / NEWS / EVENTS
For all the ups and downs and mistakes I have made, in motorcycling, I do enjoy being able to help riders make decisions by using some of that knowledge I have gained this past 50 years. Kind of like a parent, I guess, in that I don’t want to see people make the same mistakes I have. I was chatting, today, with one of our customers, named Dennis and we had a wonderful conversation about his Triumph T100 and the reasons he choose that model. He also mentioned he read my Tidbits every week and enjoyed my stories and things I wrote about.
That was very flattering and I have appreciated it when customers acknowledge my little weekly articles. I have been writing my Tidbits weekly for almost as long as we have been open. (Almost 21 years now)
It is one of my ways of trying to give back and maybe I can help someone from either making a poor decision, save some hard earned money or be safer while they ride. It is so much fun talking to customers, in person, but that doesn’t happen as much as I like anymore so I will keep writing Tidbits and keep trying to help people enjoy this fantastic sport we call motorcycling.
And since winter is upon us I will do my yearly rant on Electric clothing! An electric vest or jacket WILL be the best dollars you will ever spend to be comfortable on your motorcycle. I have used Electric vests, jackets, gloves and chaps that have enabled me to ride in weather as cold as 5 Degrees all over the country!
I’m talking about the ones you plug into your motorcycle and off you go. Here in Southern California all I use is an electric jacket, gloves and balaclava, under my helmet, and I am comfortable all winter!
Congratulations Jamie on purchasing the 300th Triumph motorcycle sold this year at Southern California Motorcycles.
2020 KTM 890 Duke R vs. 2020 Triumph Street Triple RS
It’s hard to recall the exact moment when it happened, but somewhere between burning knee pucks through Chuckwalla Valley Raceway’s 70 mph bowl turn, with Senior Editor Adam Waheed flanking me, and exiting Turn 16 in a crossed-up wheelie, disbelief set in that these are the same motorcycles on the same tires we’d used to cover hundreds of miles on the street riding from the Cycle World office to the racetrack the day before. Long hours in relative comfort, countless black lines painted on winding back roads, endless entertainment, and an average of 37 mpg between the two are a testament to the Triumph Street Triple RS’s and KTM 890 Duke R’s balance of performance, fun, and practicality.
Outright performance and practicality are cool, but, like you, we’re mostly here for the good times. And we get a lot of that, thanks to the broad aim of both these bikes. Their design philosophies hearken back to the fabled Universal Japanese Motorcycle, except they come equipped with advanced rider-aid electronics, relentless engine performance, top-shelf components from excellent suppliers, and some of the most impressive production tire technology ever offered.
But what’s particularly interesting here is that these two machines conquer similar goals in very different ways.
