Ducati Monster vs. Streetfighter

Two 890 V2 nakeds. One for every day, one built to attack.

Both use Ducati's new 890cc V2, and both are light, quick naked bikes. The real difference is focus: the Monster is the easygoing everyday Ducati, and the Streetfighter is a Panigale V2 with the fairing taken off.

Choose the Monster if…

  • You want a Ducati you'll ride every day, commute included.
  • You want a seat that sits 0.9 in lower.
  • You like strong pull low in the revs, relaxed in traffic and lively on a back road.
  • You love the Monster look Ducati has built since 1993.

Choose the Streetfighter if…

  • You're the one leading the group ride.
  • You want 9.3 hp more and fully adjustable suspension at both ends.
  • You like an aggressive, sportbike riding position.
  • Track days are on your calendar.

Which one fits your riding style?

Here's where the difference shows up on the road.

Around town

Both are light and easy to place in traffic. The Monster's lower seat and low-revving pull make it the more relaxed of the two at city speed. The Streetfighter is happy in town too, but its taller, more aggressive stance is made for faster roads.

The difference: The Monster is the easier everyday bike. The Streetfighter waits for the open road.

Canyon roads

On Angeles Crest, both are thrilling. The Streetfighter adds 9.3 hp, fully adjustable suspension and Brembo M50 brakes, and reviewers keep coming back to how easy it is to throw around. The Monster carries plenty of speed too, with traction control and a quickshifter on board.

The difference: The Monster is quick and friendly. The Streetfighter is quicker and sharper.

Track days

The Streetfighter is built from the Panigale V2, so it's at home on a track like Chuckwalla. The Monster can do a track day, but it's tuned for the road.

The difference: If track days are part of the plan, choose the Streetfighter.

Is the Streetfighter worth the step up?

It comes down to how hard you like to ride.

If your Ducati will mostly carry you to work and around the canyons on a Sunday, the Monster gives you the sound, the style and plenty of speed, and you may never want more.

If you ride fast, lead the group or plan to do track days, the Streetfighter's extra power, adjustable suspension and M50 brakes earn their keep. The step up is $2,000 in MSRP.

Our advice: Be honest about how you'll ride it. If you won't use the Streetfighter's edge, the Monster is the more enjoyable bike every day.

The best way to decide is to sit on both, back to back. We'll have them side by side for you.
